Meet Dawn - The Master Cakesmith!
Hi, I’m Dawn, chef, cake designer and founder of The Master Cakesmith.
Before cakes became my world, I spent 23 years in the Royal Air Force. After studying at university, I began my RAF career as a chef before progressing into senior management. Along the way, I worked in fine dining and as a VIP chef, including the privilege of cooking for Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, as well as many national and international dignitaries.
When I left the RAF in 2012, The Master Cakesmith began.
Today, I create wedding cakes from my Northumberland home studio for celebrations across the North East and beyond. My approach brings together two things I’ve always cared about: how food tastes and how beautiful it is presented.
I take inspiration from far more than cakes - flowers, interiors, fashion, stationery, architecture and the details of a wedding itself. The result is a style that feels romantic and refined, without ever feeling formal.
And while the design matters enormously, what’s underneath matters just as much. Seasonal fruits, handmade curds and caramels, rich chocolate ganache and carefully balanced flavours are all part of what I do.
Because your wedding cake should look completely at home in your celebration - and taste every bit as good as it looks.
A Little Bit More About Me
When I’m not making cakes, I’m usually happiest at home in the Northumberland countryside with my husband and dog - normally with a coffee somewhere close by.
I have a slight obsession with interiors, flowers and beautiful spaces, and I’m forever changing something at home or finding inspiration for the next project. I love good food, travelling, photography and anything with a strong sense of style - which probably explains why inspiration for my cakes rarely starts with cake.
And despite spending most of my working life surrounded by cake, I’m actually far more likely to choose something savoury.
